Types of Activity: Things You Can Do

When we talk about physical activity, we’re talking about movement that can be broken down into two different types:

Raise your heart rate:
Basically, movement that makes you breathe harder.

Here are some examples, but you can find more details in our Move Menu:

  • Running
  • Hopping
  • Skipping
  • Jumping Rope
  • Swimming
  • Dancing
  • Canoeing
  • Hiking
  • Skateboarding
  • Rollerblading
  • Brisk Walking
  • Bike Riding (Stationary Or Road Bike)
  • Housework and yard work, such as sweeping or pushing a lawn mower
  • Games that require catching and throwing, such as baseball and softball

Build lean muscle:
Basically, repetitive movements that make your muscles tired.

Some examples:

  • Lifting weights
  • Working with resistance bands
  • Games like tug-of-war
  • Heavy yard work like chopping wood, lifting, and digging
  • Body weight exercises
  • Climbing and bouldering
  • Sit-ups (curl-ups or crunches)
