Finding time to get moving isn’t easy when you spend a huge chunk of your day sitting in class, so it’s a smart idea to make the most of the time you spend on your feet. Agreed?
Toning sneakers are a huge fitness trend right now, and we wanted to know if they really work. Slipping on a pair of shoes (and walking in them, of course) sounds a little too easy, so we did some research to find out if toning shoes produce real results.
The claim: The secret is in the sole, which varies by brand. Whether it’s a chunky curve, weight-shifting wedge or built in “balance pods,” the soles make you use your muscles in a way that will tone your legs and butt.
The facts: Toning shoes do force you to use muscles in your legs and butt, but these muscles should already be engaged when you’re walking regardless of your footwear. The shoes do, however, make you walk properly. “If people do feel that they tone, it’s more because they’re walking more or they’re walking the right way, so they’re actually recruiting the muscles they should be recruiting,” Dr. Emily Splichal, podiatrist and trainer at a New York Sports Club told Betty Confidential. John Rowley, Director of Fitness & Wellness at The American Institute of Healthcare & Fitness in North Carolina, points out that a pair of new kicks might also motivate you to walk more, which is a plus. “The key advantage of these types of shoes is that they make the consumer more excited to exercise,” he says, “Oftentimes people need and want a certain outfit, gloves, or pair of shoes to motivate them and get them into [gear]. If that is the case, then go out and get them.”
So, what’s the difference between the brands? We got the scoop from NeverSayDiet’s fitness experts. Check out their reviews and our favorite styles:
MBT’s Anti Shoe, $130-$390: “In a study published in the Journal of Prevention and Rehabilitation, this shoe did have postural benefits. The good news is that if your back is achy and your posture could use a boost, these shoes can definitely help with standing tall. This will improve your appearance and prevent future back and joint problems.”
Our favorite style: Chapa GTX® in Storm (Pictured), $169.00
Skechers Shape-Ups, $50-$175: “These have a similar concept to MBT’s, so if you’re looking for a little help with the slouch go for it. Just remember that wearing these shoes isn’t your replacement for the gym.”
Our favorite style: Physique in black, $174.95
Earth’s Exer-Fit, $49-$229: “Unlike most sandals, these will provide you with great arch support and even a little extra incline in the sole to push your weight back over your heels. It’s a great way to engage the core muscles and improve posture.”
Our favorite style: Leela in Almond Butter Calf, $101.85
