Super cute coats for the curvy girl
By Chloe Nurik January 26
The weather outside may be frightful, but winter coats are oh-so-delightful! They protect you from the cold, complete an outfit, and make you look as cute as a snow bunny. However, just as no two snowflakes are identical, no two winter coats are exactly the same. They have slight variations which can either make you look like a dazzling snow angel or the shapeless abominable snow man. But have no fear; your resident fashionasta is here to set the record straight about the best and worst cozy winter coats for curvy girls.
Do carefully consider the ideal length coat for your height and body type.
On the whole, longer coats are more flattering for curvy girls. Sometimes, short hemlines on jackets draw attention to areas that are unflattering, especially if they end right at your waist. However, for those of us who weren’t blessed with the tall gene, it is best to go with a shorter hemline so you don’t overwhelm your frame. A hemline that hits somewhere between the hips and knees is usually the most flattering of all.
Do invest in small details.
While clothes may make the man, accessories make the woman! Tiny embellishments on jackets (such as belts or buttons) help to make your coat the star of the show. Wearing a jacket with a little pizzazz will help you to stand out. Plus, these details will capture attention and draw eyes away from other areas. A jacket with a belt around the waist is also a great option. It cinches the waist in a flattering way.
Do choose slimming fabric.
Wool, corduroy, and felt are stylish choices that highlight a curvy girl’s natural frame. These fabrics are sleek and modern, and make for an extraordinary winter coat. On the other hand, bulky fabrics will weigh you down and make you look heavier. Here are the three worst winter coat culprits:
Fleece= So-so.
Pleather= No-go.
Nylon= Heck to the no!
Even if you don’t know all these fabrics by name, it is easy to recognize a style that will flatter your shape. Look for coats with slimming fabrics that show you off instead of coats with bulky material that will add on pounds and leave you looking like the Michelin tire man.
Do select coats that have a streamlined shape.
Avoid coats that make you look boxy! The most flattering coats are the ones that have a natural hourglass shape to them, wider at the hips than the waist. This style will show off your curves and complement you in all the right places.
Buyer beware! Although it is easy to look great in winter coats, there are a few traps that we sometimes fall into. These simple mistakes can leave us feeling like fashion victims! Here’s what to avoid:
Don’t go for something uber-trendy.
Although these coats may seem fun at the time, they will shortly be out of season. Instead, go for a timeless look that will last you several winters. Think twice before buying coats in bright colors or busy fabrics since they are less versatile and match fewer outfits. Neutral-colored coats are the name of the game.
Don’t buy a coat with a massive design element.
Although some flair is fab, too much bling overwhelms your body. Instead of looking cute, this coat will come off looking strange at best. Think simple and classy and choose a simple flower or belt instead of a colossal design element.
Don’t forget the magic of a good tailor.
If something doesn’t fit quite right, don’t sweat it! Bring your fave coat to the tailor and he will make it fit like Cinderella’s slipper…what more could a princess ask for?
Don’t know where to start? No worries: Here is a list of the best coats for curvy girls.
A) Pretty Plaid – from Torrid
B) Terrific Trenches – from Wet Seal
C) Wonderful Wool – from Lane Bryant
D) Tasteful Terry – from Lane Bryant
Quick quiz: What’s warm as toast but as cool as ice? Answer: You in this season’s winter coats. Embrace the weather and look for coats that flatter your shape, with fine fabrics and cute details. At the same time, don’t fall victim to huge designs or tacky colors that draw attention away from the most important part of the outfit: you! Stay stylish and warm this winter. After all, the snow is falling, and your chic winter coat is calling!
