Fall Fashion Alert: Leggings and Tights
By Chloe Nurik August 18

Hey you! Don’t put away that dress just because it’s just a teeny bit too short. And don’t ignore that cutie-pie shirt just because it won’t look quite right with jeans. That’s right curvy girls, you have a new secret weapon that will combat any fashion emergency: leggings and tights!

Don’t be afraid to try this trend. It’s super easy and really flattering. In fact, tons of curvy celebs (think Kim Kardashian) are currently pulling off this look! Still unsure? This stylista is here to give you the tips you need to strut around in your sexy stockings!

Do make sure to buy a pair of black leggings or tights.

Black is the most important color to have because it goes with every outfit. You can rock everything from a simple long tee to a formal LBD (Little black dress) when you have a pair of black nylons in your wardrobe. Plus, black is the perfect color if you want to appear longer and leaner. Um, yes please. Black is forgiving and flattering! Oh how we wish boys could be like that! These black tights hold it in and show it off. Amazing!

Do match your leggings or tights to the style of your outfit.

Although leggings and tights are super versatile, they look best when paired with a short dress or long tee – basically a style that covers your rump. But if your top is too long, then it won’t show off your fab hosiery. Shoot for dresses/shirts that fall somewhere between your knee and mid-thigh. To make the most of this style, plan your outfit around your leggings and not the other way around. After all, a good pair is definitely a fashion statement. P.S. Wearing a frock with tights and a denim jacket is super hot! Va-va-voom you’ll shake the room! These tights would look TOO ADORABLE with a little black dress! There should be a law against something that looks this good!

Do make sure to get leggings that go down to your ankles.

Leggings that stop at the calves can actually make you look heavier and won’t show you off the right way. Instead, look for a pair that elongates and slims your legs by going all the way down to your ankles. What girl would say no to that?

DO experiment with fun patterns and styles.

Life is too short not to have fun with your fashion. Plus, when you look good, you feel good. So I say buy an outrageous pair of tights…just because you can. But make sure to wear them with a simple or solid color top in order to keep the tights the focal point of your outfit. This will be oh so playful! I love these C-A-R-A-Z-Y tights! Pairing them with a denim skirt is really fresh.

Alright, enough with the dos, and on to the don’ts. As many ways as there are to rock this look, there are more than enough ways to bomb it as well. Pay attention so that you don’t fall victim to one of these leggings and tights fashion faux paus.

Do not wear leggings as pants!

I repeat, they ARE NOT a replacement for pants! Especially for us curvy girls, it is essential to remember that leggings go under long tops or dresses but do not act as a bottom themselves. Wearing them as pants will leave you looking strange, lumpy, and frumpy. And that is definitely not stylish. Notice how the “fashion victim” in this picture chooses to wear leggings as pants. One word gals: Unflattering. Avoid the urge!

Do not mix and match the fabrics of your outfit.

This creates a confusing and odd look. For example, if you are wearing a knit dress, lace tights are not the best option. The formality of the tights contrasts with the casualness of the dress and comes off as unpolished. If you do choose to wear the knit dress, go for a more basic style-such as plain black leggings. Exhibit “fashion victim” number two. Enough said…

Do not wear tights or leggings if they have rips in them.

They just look plain gross. Girl, just invest in some new tights please. Clean them, love them, take care of them. If you put them in the washer, they will stretch out and be a million miles long. If you put them in the dryer they will fry and shrink, also not good. See, these tights look more Halloween than Beauty Queen. Now that’s scary!

Curvy girls: Don’t be scared of tights and leggings! You can totally own this look. When you cover your booty, black, ankle length leggings can be oh-so-thinning and stylish! But don’t forget, leggings do not equal pants. Therefore, respect your leggings and show them off. After all, they are more than the perfect accessory: they are a fashion necessity!
