Fact: wearing a sun dress will leave you feeling cool, feminine, and flirty. But in order to make this look sizzling hot, it’s important that your sun dress actually fit you, so that it shows off your curves instead of covering them up. As fitmi’s resident stylista, I’m here to give you the lowdown on one of summer’s best looks.
Let’s talk pattern
When shopping for sun dresses, opt for frocks with a single color or a simple pattern. When you mix and match patterns, it could overwhelm (rather than highlight) your shape. Plus, choosing a simpler pattern will give you tons of options for accenting your look with colorful accessories.

What I’m loving:
This dress (LEFT) is a single color that is taken up a notch by the addition of an ah-dorable accessory! This necklace is too cute, right?
Or what about pairing this sweet ruffled linen dress (RIGHT) in the color Razzamatazz with a bold beaded necklace and girlie sandals?
Let’s talk shape
Sadly, not all sun dress shapes work on curvy bodies. For instance, we should stay away from dresses with no defined waist (they’ll just look like potato sacks) and dresses with way to many ruffles (they’ll just look like potato sacks with ruffles). That said, a sundress with an empire waist does wonders for a curvy figure. It’s flattering on almost everybody as it accentuates your naturally small upper waist, and flows right over your belly and butt!

What I’m loving:
This aqua halter top sun dress (LEFT) gives everyone a tiny waist while creating balance between the top and bottom. Plus, I love, love, love the color!
This striped Chambrey dress (RIGHT) also universally flatters, by cinching in your waist and leaving room for your legs and butt.
Let’s talk length
If you’re tall, congrats, a maxi dress will look amazing on you. The maxi dress is a totally hot look that can transition from day to night. But, for those of us on the, ahem, shorter side, it’s best to stick to sundresses that fall right above or below the knee. We won’t get lost in them and we will be able to move around with ease. Plus, a dress that falls slightly above the knee can even make a petite girl look like she has longer legs! When choosing a length for your sundress, just use this tip that I learned when preparing essays: make sure it’s long enough to cover the subject but short enough to keep it interesting.

What I’m loving:
This dress (LEFT) is an ideal length for us shorties, and can work for casual or dressy events depending on how you accessorize!
For the taller girls, I’m swooning over this pretty blue maxi dress (RIGHT) accessorized with the big necklace. Pair it with your most girlie sandals to complete the outfit!
See how easy it is to wear this universally flattering look? Just pick a sundress with the right the color, pattern, shape and length to flatter your figure, and rock what you’ve got!
