They say ‘black is slimming’. Well, I don’t know exactly who “they” are, but “they” must have a very boring wardrobe!
Since learning how to pick out my own clothes at fifteen, I mean five (awkward…), wearing bright colors has got to be one of the best parts. From playing it cool in turquoise to glamming it up in fire-engine red to going pretty in pink – sporting a bold color shows that you’re confident and creative. And what better way to let your personality shine through than to wear your signature shade?
Well guess what, bright hues can look fantastic on anyone, as long as you follow a few simple guidelines. For instance, red pants and a green sweater should be reserved for the month of December. Check out our list of dos and don’ts and start stylin’ it bright!
DO: Wear one bright color at a time. That lime scarf or violet pencil skirt is going to really pop when worn against neutrals like whites, blacks, greys, browns or tans. When the rest of your outfit is toned down, you can go as bright as you want on the one piece without sending your ensemble over the edge.
DON’T: Mix two or more bright colors. A sunset orange tee looks awesome with your jean skirt, but pair it with hot pink capris, and you’ve got color overload. While sporting a single bright color looks classy and fun, packing a bunch into one outfit might have you looking more like a clown than a fashionista.
DO: Know what colors look good on you. Knowing what colors compliment you skin tone, hair, and eyes can be tricky, but it’s well worth the effort. One way to learn is to just hold up a variety of colors near your face. If a color makes you look washed out, pale, or dull, it’s probably not for you. ‘Your colors’ will make you look vibrant and healthy. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, a trip to the make-up counter at the mall might do the trick. Makeup artists are specifically trained to know what colors will look good on you.
DON’T: Give up a color completely just because it doesn’t work with your skin tone. If your favorite lemon yellow leaves you looking pale, wear it on your bag, belt or shoes! Since these items aren’t seen near your face, you can get away with wearing a bright that might not flatter you in the form of a scarf or shirt.
DO: Go bright with your nails and make up. A neon pink manicure or a hint of shamrock green eyeliner can be just the colorful boost you’re looking for without a major wardrobe investment. But remember, play up just one feature at a time. Pairing robin’s egg blue eye-shadow with candy-pink blush and fire-engine red lipstick will make people wonder if you just crawled out of a box of crayons.
DON’T: Mix uber-bright makeup with uber-bright clothes. The three keys to rockin’ bold colors is moderation, moderation, and moderation. So chose one feature or one item of clothing to grab the eye, and downplay the rest.
DO: Wear bright tones in shimmery, flowy, light fabrics. Shimmery and light-weight cloth such as satin, satin-look-alikes, light linen, and light-weight cotton give bright colors and easy-going feel. This keeps your overall look fresh and fun, instead of heavy and over-the-top.
DON’T: Mix bright colors with bold patterns. Sure we love magenta, and of course we dig Hawaiian floral patterns, but…maybe not together. If you’re going to go bold in your fave new hue, keep busy patterns and prints to a minimum.
DO: Find your signature color. You know the one we’re talking about. The color that always catches your eye. The one that makes you secretly happy. The one you’ve been obsessed with from 3rd grade on…Find out what your special shade is, and then rock it with some serious style!
DON’T: Feel like you have to wear a certain color just because it’s ‘in’ right now. Different colors work on different gals, and you’ll always look your best if you wear the right colors for you.
Okay, so what’s your favorite color? How do you wear it?
