Don’t throw away that broken earring! It could dangle in your new favorite necklace.

Transforming old or unused jewelry into a one-of-a-kind piece is a great way to make a fashion statement. And–bonus!–it’s eco-friendly, too.

Jewelry designer Christina Perry uses antique beads to create her own recycled jewelry. “People are becoming more conscious of their carbon footprint,” she told LoveToKnow.com, “Even though a piece of jewelry takes up a minimal amount of physical space, what did it take to make it and ship it?”

There are plenty of ways to transform your old jewelry into something new, like using pearls from a broken necklace to make a pair of earrings. You can even make jewelry out of random objects like forks and toothbrushes. About.com has a bunch of other easy DIY jewelry ideas, including a how-to for building a “Decapitated Barbie Jewelry Hanger”!

Recycled jewelry makes a great gift, and you can even earn a few bucks selling your designs on Etsy.

Have you ever recycled your jewelry? What did you make?
