Avoid A Cold Weather Coma
By December 2

When temperatures drop, it’s not as easy to get moving (especially when hot chocolate and cozy blankets are involved). Still, exercise is a proven way to warm up. So why not make it fun?

Fitsmi has some tips for spicing up your winter workout.

Hit the school gym after class with your BFF. Working out with a friend is safer than working out alone and can be really motivating. When you’re done for the day, do something fun together like see a movie or make fruit smoothies.

Walk the mall. It may not be the most intense workout, but it’s warm inside and there’s plenty of ground to cover. If you need some motivation, set a goal for how many minutes you want to walk and reward yourself at the end with a scarf or that pair of neon shoes you’ve had your eye on.

Go for a run. Seriously! ThatsFit.com interviewed Mindy Solkin (aka Coach Mindy), owner and head coach of The Running Center in New York City. According to Coach Mindy, changing the clothes you wear outside can make running in the cold more bearable. Wearing three light layers on top is ideal, but you don’t want to double up on socks, “People think it will keep them warmer, but your shoes won’t fit properly and you’ll change your running form as a result and that’s how you get black toenails or other injuries.” She also suggests wearing a hat and gloves in temperatures below 50 degrees (We promise, when you come back your blanket and hot chocolate will be waiting for you–and after your run, you’ll have earned it!)

If you’re into running but really not a fan of the cold, put a treadmill on your holiday wishlist–and cross your fingers, because they’re expensive! We hear Craigslist has some pretty good deals.

How do you stay active in when it’s cold outside?
