Gabourey Sidibe’s Lessons On Self Love By November 29
We totally understand if you don’t have permission to see Precious (It’s rated R for some pretty intense stuff). But even if you haven’t seen the movie, you can learn a lot from the lead actress, Gabourey “Gabby” Sidibe.
In the movie, Gabby’s character Precious has a rough life. She’s 16 and illiterate, raped and impregnated by her father, physically and verbally abused by her jealous mother, and, to make matters worse, the family barely has enough money to get by. When times are too tough to bear, Precious fantasizes about being a glamorous movie star on the red carpet with adoring fans begging for photos and autographs.
In real life, Gabby is a glamorous movie star who everyone loves—and she accomplished superstardom with self-confidence. “I’ve never been a small girl,” Gabby told Oprah Winfrey during her appearance on Oprah this month, “One day I had to sit down with myself and decide that I loved myself no matter what my body looked like and what other people thought about my body.”
If you watch Gabby’s television interviews, it’s clear that her philosophy on self-love really works. In October, Gabby danced onto the set of Ellen before sitting down, all smiles, to discuss the movie. Check out the interview:
These days, everyone’s talking about Gabby and her positive body image. Nicole Nichols of DailySpark.com really puts Gabby’s ideas into perspective: “When you choose to love yourself, you are more likely to take good care of yourself and to behave more confidently, which in turn could open so many doors in your life, just like it has for Gabby who was virtually unknown until making this film.”
