School Dance Freakouts: How to Deal

Between dress shopping, date drama and last minute pimples, school dances can really make a girl crazy. Whether they drive you the good crazy or the bad crazy, though, depends on you. Personally, I experience a semi-good, semi-INSANE type of crazy. Usually, it’s not until I step onto the dance floor that I start getting pumped up. But the weeks of stress and preparation that precede that magical evening are what drive me bonkers.

I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who’s felt that jolt of excitement (or stab of anxiety) that follows the news of an upcoming dance. Whether you hear it on the school announcements or see a flier in the hallway, the same question runs through the minds of all us single chicks: “Am I going to have a date?”

Maybe the school dance gods smile upon you as the event draws nearer and you find a date. In which case, congratulations! And then, of course, there are the lucky girls in relationships who have automatic dates whenever a dance rolls around. Congratulations to you, too! Cherish every stress free, rejection free, and embarrassment free moment you have. But those of us who don’t have dates–or, worse, were turned down as a date–are sometimes left debating whether we’ll have a good time going solo or if we’ll feel totally awkward.

Want my advice? Listen up.

There are going to be times when the person we want to go to the dance with doesn’t end up going with us, for whatever reason. It hurts, I know. But believe it or not, there is light at the end of the rejection-tunnel–whether that light be a different date, a group of supportive and sympathetic friends, or a smokin’ new look that turns everyone’s heads. It may be hard to believe after a cold rejection, but dances can actually be a lot more fun without a date. Seriously! So cross it off your list and move on.

Okay, moving on: Dress shopping. Some girls stress about finding a dress, but I say have fun with it! I love going dress shopping with my friends. Unlike my parents, they know what’s in style and will give me their honest opinions. Also, the earlier you start dress shopping, the better. Rushing to find accessories and shoes to match at the last minute is a surefire way to skyrocket your stress level.

You still have two things left to do when the night finally comes: Relax and enjoy yourself!

Do you guys stress before a school dance, too? What tips do you have for having a good time?
