New York’s been making some big changes in the way we eat. After banning trans fats from restaurants and requiring restaurant chains to post calorie counts in their menus, the city is now waging a battle against sodium.
Don’t expect saltshakers to start disappearing, though. The city plans to go after the sodium in packaged foods and restaurant meals because, after all, most of our sodium intake comes from processed foods. According to the American Heart Association, healthy folks should limit their salt intake to 2,300 milligrams a day or less–which is about a teaspoon of salt. Americans average from 2,900 to 4,300 milligrams a day (eek!). That’s not good news for our hearts and kidneys.
Think this doesn’t apply to you if you don’t live in the city? Think again. As E. Charles Hunt of the New York Restaurant Association says, “New York City serves as a model for the rest of the world.” If the plan goes through in New York, the rest of the country could jump on board.
What do you think about this new plan to lower sodium in processed foods? Do you like salty or sweet foods better?
